Macmull Custom Guitars is an Israeli-based guitar company founded on a serious passion for music, guitars and craftsmanship. Macmull offers the Heartbreaker with single-coils, P-90s and humbuckers.
Stinger
The Stinger is an original Macmull design and is offered at a more affordable price point. This workhorse double-cut is a unique fusion of California and Kalamazoo, with a chameleonic tone that can cut through a mix with ease. Within the Stinger’s simple control scheme, a universe of incredible tones is at your fingertips. Macmull presents the Stinger with dual P-90 pickups or with T-style single-coils.
As well as being true experts on what makes vintage electric guitars tick, the team at Macmull Custom Guitars also know how to recreate that magic consistently. It all begins with a thorough wood-selection criteria, where all tonewoods are hand-picked. For Macmull, choosing the perfect piece of wood and the relationship between the neck, body and pickups is crucial. Aside from wood’s age when it was cut, its grain and its texture, weight is a major factor. Macmull firmly believes that for a wooden instrument to have peak punchiness, attack and vintage dryness it needs to be lightweight, so choosing a light piece of wood is the basis of all their guitars. That’s why a Macmull guitar will never be heavier than 3.45kg, ensuring optimal tone and comfortable playability.
After the rigorous wood selection, the next stage of the process is Macmull’s special RVT (short for Real Vintage Tone) system. This system is a key part of what gives Macmull Custom Guitars their authentically vintage tonal character. The system involves a careful process where the guitar’s body is matched with a neck that sonically supports it throughout the EQ spectrum. Due to this intense wood selection and pairing process, no two Macmull guitars are ever the same.
At Macmull, the processing and handling of the wood is every bit as vital as the wood choice itself. Because of this, you can always expect a vocal-like mid-range, detailed high-mids and “analogue” trebles with a tight, punchy bass from a Macmull Custom Guitar. If a piece of wood isn’t “living” as a body or a neck, it’s set aside and the selection process starts again. Instead of replicating the exact processes that went into building those desirable pre-CBS guitars, Macmull use their own measures of construction which have been gradually honed to perfection. According to Macmull, by moving away from strict old-school specs they’ve actually improved the balance and tone of their instruments over the vintage models.
After going to such lengths to choose the right wood for the guitar, using any off-the-shelf pickup would seem to be a step back. That’s why Macmull wind all their own pickups in-house. For Macmull, the pickups need to have an organic sound that reflects the actual wooden sound of the guitar. When you buy a Macmull Custom Guitar, its pickups will have been specially matched to your individual guitar.
When creating their custom pickups, the Macmull Custom Guitars team chooses from a selection of alnico magnets and wire gauges. The goal is a medium output pickup with plenty of headroom that also doesn’t interfere with the nature of the wood’s sound. Even the parts, including the wires, pots and caps, have been carefully selected to retain the natural sound of the guitar’s wood.
At the heart of Macmull Guitars is the eponymous luthier Tal Macmull, sound engineer/producer Amit R Sadras and professional guitarist Sharon Levi. Amit met Tal when they were kids and would form a lifelong friendship that would lead to the creation of Macmull Custom Guitars. As teenagers obsessed with music, Amit and Tal weren’t able to afford a quality guitar. With Tal’s technical expertise and Amit’s playing experience in tow, the duo would begin their guitar building journey.
The pair eventually made their first two guitars in 2004, at the age of 16. They soon discovered that their skills were complementary, with Tal identifying technical issues and Amit able to find the solution. With limited resources available to them at the time, they would painstakingly teach themselves the craft of making instruments. This self-taught approach is a testament to the Macmull team’s unrelenting drive and passion for guitars. After completing their mandatory army service, Amit and Tal would continue to help each other with their projects. Amit would assist Tal in the workshop whilst Tal would help out in Amit’s studio. By 2010, Amit and Tal would start taking their profession to the next level, using their years of sound and engineering to form their own guitar company.
